I think he's absolutely correct, but by now (especially over the last 8 years) I've become so polarized that I'm no longer interested in common ground; I'm interested in bombing the Red States. I've become a single issue voter focused on what's best for gay families; they are - as you put it - my constituency and I now judge everything in the political arena by its relevance to what's best for my own constituency first. I don't have much experience with the Left (as a Rational Anarcho-Syndicalist I've always found them too conservative for my taste), but I can see that this is probably how that process of identity politics and factionalization that you're talking (okay, ranting) about begins, and I think that the political environment under the recent Bush administrations has only accelerated the process.
