Good show. Keep the “bashings” segment.

Glad Daniel has finally gotten a grip and moved on. Perhaps in his discussions he’ll meet that one black friend who’ll help him understand. Maybe.

    Hey, JW,

Love that you listen and love the comment. I think the “bashing” segment seems like a good idea…

    Hey, Susan,

Yes, that’s you saying goodbye at the end…it’s from one of the messages you left me awhile back and it’s great as an ending…the violence is horrible and sickening and feel free to skip ahead in the future if you need to…love you, too Sue…

    Hiya JoeGee,

I feel the same way about the call ins vs. blog comments… I suddenly felt disconnected when you started using the phone (I have this thing about phones, it just seems to be missing something).

I think you are right, in this country I don’t think they shoot horses or bash Christians, but people still beat on fags. As a matter of fact, not sure Christian bashing (the literal stuff) has ever caught on in the states. Do you imply a link between Christianity and the physical bashing of gays? I.e., do you think those responsible for the bashing were ‘Christians?’ That this is just another form of ‘loving the sinner’ but ‘hating the sin?’

  5. Teresa Says:

Great to hear from you as always Joe. I like that you added the bashing segment. The Right have always been very adept at turning minority groups against each other. Just look at the history of gang warfare. Actually, the whole history of the United States can be understood in this way. I think gays and lesbians need to step back from their personal feelings of anger–which are understandable–and look at who the real enemy is. It is not other oppressed minorities. Ask, who is behind setting oppressed groups against each other? Where does the money come from? That will lead to more understanding and more informed strategy.

  6. Joe G. Says:

    Hey, lower case paul,

Long time no “hear” (or should that be “post”). I had thought that the addition of the phone line had inhibited some regular posters here, and sure enough I was accurate. I’m glad that you confirmed this for me.

As to the link between Christianity and bashing – certainly from a historical perspective the Christian church, in its various different forms, has targeted certain groups to blame for the problems of the society it is a part of. As to whether the bashers are “Christian” – I’m sure some of them justify their actions secondary to what they “learned” in church (however vaguely they remember any of it). Generally, I’m not aware of any of these attackers mounting a concerted violent campaign against glbt folks as has sometimes been done, let’s say, by extremist Moslems against their perceived political enemies.

But generally, in the States at least, other more aggressive individuals (a lot of times younger men) pick up the attitude of certain parts of Christianity (I’d say it’s still a majority of the Christian religion even with the advances made in some quarters) and then start swinging fists, bats, knives, and shooting guns. Praise God!

Thanks for the post, lower case paul!

    Hey, T.!

Bingo! I think that was my underlying message that I never quite got to. I suspect it’s hard for white glbt folks like me – to “see” that point because in some ways we are still part of the mainstream in some ways and so don’t always have as much of an “outsider view” that lots of glbt ethnic minorities have.

BTW, I’m not even trying to be “sensitive” or politically correct with this stuff; I just see it as a matter of being more accurate and fair.

    You know I adore you!

  7. p2son Says:

Strange, over at Trans-Ponder podcast Marvin is in the midst of a bitter conflict with the right-wing fundamentalist Christian, Elizabeth Jeremiah, and over here he has stirred up a conflict with the far left, post-gay Joe Gee. Who would have thought you had so much in common with Elizabeth. She also rebuked him in Jesus’ name.

Thank you for the bash section. Very good and very well presented.

I’m off to CA and only regret you will not be there to meet me. Tell Teresa about my show. I think she will like to learn about all of these transgender Bible characters.

    smooch

  8. [...] of crazed extremists, Joe Gee, on his most recent Bored Beyond Belief podcast (episode 42) includes two messages from Marvin Bloom. In response to Joe’s Death Watch list (episode 40), [...]

  9. Joe G. Says:

    Peterson,

I just read the “Marvin Makes Enemies” post at your blog. It’s me and Elizabeth tag teamed against Marvey!

    BTW, “post-gay”? When did I become “post-gay”??? :)

  10. p2son Says:

yeah, you are beyond gay now. Post-gay, means you still like the guys, but your identity is so much broader than just being gay. Some ex-gays recently took to taking on ‘post-gay’ not realizing that it already had a pro-gay history to it. Your irreverence bumps you up on the gay progressive scale to the level of ‘post-gay.’ Congratulations!

  11. susan Says:

just checking back ..you got alot of great comments here !!!

  12. Joe G. Says:

    Peterson,

Please! No linking me to the ex-gays stuff. Ugh! ;)

    Susan,

    I know…lots of comments, which I love!

  13. lower case paul Says:

    Joegee,

So, you’re going to bring history into this, eh? No one expects the Spanish inquisition. (I love that line). Well okay then… I find it’s the pesky fundamentalists who are a source of mayhem. Once you claim the whole bible is the inerrant word of God, you gotta find some way for the genocidal God of the Tenach to vent occasionally (enter gays). I find that most liberal Christians are pretty nice (and reasonably harmless) cause they generally believe that God probably isn’t into hell and stuff.

But I think you are on the right track citing history (my brain went there earlier after throwing out the bait). I am pretty convinced that it is not a long trip from the nobles oblige exercised by many when they remind us we are headed for hell to getting to that place where they help send us there. What good ‘Christian’ want to do God’s will?

  14. lower case paul Says:

i wish you had an edit function. last sentence should read … “doesn’t want to do God’s will…”

  15. Joe G. Says:

    lower case paul,

I guess I expanded the conversation a bit by making such a broad statement about Christianity and history, blah, blah, blah. It’s only an impression, but there does seem to be that pattern. And the more conservative elements tend to be most implicated (including our relatively new kids on the block – the fundamentalists – who’ve only been around, officially, since, I think, the 1920’s).

BTW, I’m unclear why wordpress doesn’t allow commenters to edit their own comments. Maybe if that were allowed some people would endlessly edit what they posted. :)

  16. Kalvin Says:

I enjoyed the show JoeG. I thought Marvin was hilarious. No one accuses me of being anti-christian. Wonder why that is? I admit that the Black community wasn’t exactly at fault for the passage of Prop 8, but if it were solely religious why would Latinos be more accepting of homosexuals? Not saying the gay community isn’t at fault either. It just shows how much work both communities have to do to understand each other and build coalitions. Maybe gays heard that Jesus was a Black man and they’re anti-xtian, so they haven’t worked on their racism/unconcious cognitive bias enough.

  17. Joe G. Says:

    Kalvin,

So good to see your comment here.

I didn’t mean to suggest that the motivation for the support of Prop 8 was only due to religious affiliation, but that religious affiliation and belief are strong predictors for voting against glbt rights (especially regarding marriage). I thought I had read that a small majority of other ethnic groups had also voted for Prop 8, but I might be wrong.

As to Marvin: he’s in denial about his infatuation with me.

So glad you listened and stopped by to comment!

  18. I can’t believe how much Marvin sounds like an ex friend of mine. I love your show so much. I would love to have you on my show if you would be willing to do so.

  19. p2son Says:

Ramble Redhead, who you really need to have on your show is Marvin! I can put you in touch :-p

  20. Joe G. Says:

    Hey, Ramble,

Yeah, Marvin reminds a lot of people of a lot of things (for better or worse).

I’d be glad to be on your show if you’d like. Just let me know and we can go from there. My email is joemg7777 AT gmail DOT com.

    Peterson,

No one deserves having to deal with Marvin as I have had to deal with him. It’s a heavy cross to bear…Dear, God, I thought you were more sensitive about these things than that…;)

  21. p2son Says:

Joe, Joe, Joe, you know better than most that I have NO CONTROL over Marvin. He’s gone rogue.

  22. Joe G. Says:

Marvin has gone “rogue”? Ha! Any other personalities gone “rogue”??? :)

  23. p2son Says:

Joe, we recently had “an incident” in the Peterson personality factory. Whatever you do, do not, I repeat, DO NOT, give me your phone number!
